Vegas Graff: Dignity

Vegas Graff: Dignity

This made me chuckle because I think this is fitting for my whole fucking trip here really...

We came in yesterday for the NAB convention and right away I felt grumpy and irritated. Generally affected by the stifling negativity that is Las Vegas, to say the least. I bought a 24-hour bus ticket for my stay here, dropped my crap off at my friend's place, took a ride to the convention center, and begrudgingly flung myself into multiple halls of "all important" "media types," aka drones of brain wash. I came with my starry eye'd time-lapse partner; but as for me, after sacrificing my youth to corporate media and suits hellbent on ruining a trusting workforce, I've intentionally capped my work in media and production anymore to a few items that aren't really "NAB-ish." I will occasionally produce for independent productions. Other than that, I have no interest in the rest of that bullshit.

Never-the-less, there I was - spending my day watching groups of executives and grunts giggling like frat boys at equipment and systems beyond their comprehensions. Deciding more, while pseudo vacationing at the expense of their company, on how to profit from broadcast and social media - rather than practicing the ethical faculties of social benefit from the bygone days of broadcast. And there I was - sore feet, sore interest. A little chaffed at the mockery of what my industry has become and definitely at being in a city born on 0 ethics. Also grumpy at my own shallow issues of being too broke to go blow $5 on some Black Jack, a smoke, and a drink. Kind of like - why the shit am I in Vegas?

Anyway, I was glad when it was finally time to get back on the bus to go home. I got on and then sat down for the first time in 5-hours. I was tired but finally chillin' when a transit cop came up and requested my ticket ... oh yea - the 24-hour pass which was no longer in my damned pocket. Of course it fell out onto the floor of the NAB. Why wouldn't it?! And that's about it - I got a nice $70 ticket to cap off a day I was already done with. A ticket and getting booted off the bus a mile from the place I was lodging when I was already exhausted and sore. But this is the best part. Right when I thought I couldn't get a break I ran into "dignity child" eternally pissing himself in stencil. At least the Vegas street artists get it and it made me smile and laugh a little inside.

And I think it totally sums the whole day's ordeal up nicely in my head...
Hopefully this is it for Vegas opine entries. I've got a day left here so - here's to hoping I can still keep a hold of my dignity for the ride back home.

In the main event auditorium, one floor below ground level - I was one of the unlucky ones who had no cell phone service, little or no bars at all, no 3G, or even E service. Posting was few and far between.

Maybe that was a good thing.

Oh, yeah - Chibi-Black Jack says: "Brush Your Teeth" - Seriously. ^_^;

Burford, The Priory

Burford, The Priory

Gentleman's mansion house, on site of a small Augustinian Hospital. c.1200 and late 16th century, remodelled and extended mid C17 by William (Speaker) Lenthall, and altered again after 1808 when it was greatly reduced in size. Ashlar and dressed rubble, Cotswold stone roofs. Largely Jacobean with fragmentary C13 and c.1580 elements. Roughly U- plan. Three storeys and attic. Outer gables with steps and cut finials, ; central fluted-fan panel with finials, flanked by set-back, paired diagonal-shaft chimneys. Mullion windows, very long on 1st floor. 3 storey outer bays with crenellations (1580s, moved from S.front - see scars - in mid-cl7). Central swagger porch with Corinthian ground floor and Composite 1st floor; panels, atlantes, strapwork and 'shield', arched doorway. South side: mid-C17 six-bay long gallery wing in freestone with arched-architraves, scroll keys and panelled pilasters to 1st floor windows, bulls-eye windows below, cornice and parapet, weathered verges, ashlar chimney. C18 extension, irregular 11/2 and 2 storey wing, restored 1923, one cross-mullion window to 1st floor right, a Serliana loggia to right of centre with shaped gable over, 4 hipped dormers to left. Rear of house; irregular, dominated by taller stair block with two arched windows (mid-C18); U-plan ranges, South wing restored by Horniman with elements of Cotswold style and Voyseyish detail. The interior: 3 C13 (early) arches and piers re-instated in entrance hall which has a C17 fire-place. Early- mid C18 staircase with 3 barley-sugar balusters per tread, fluted Corinthian newels, enriched plaster ceiling with high relief rose and pendant. On 1st floor, the 'ball-room' (present chapel) has wide-rib enriched plaster ceiling with pedants; large fire-place with 3 spiral pairs of palmette-Ionic columns, broken segmental pediment and overmantel carving in the same spirit as the Harman memorial in the Parish Church (q.v.) however with the Lenthall arms and grey-hound crest; excellent pine panelling. The spine wall at rear of front block is basically mediaeval. History The Hospital of St John the Evangelist was 1st recorded in 1226 and was quite small. In 1543, it was granted to Edmund Harman, one of Henry VIII's barber-surgeons, who seems to have built a mansion here. The Priory was next acquired by Sir Lawrence Tanfield, later Lord Chief Baron of the Exchequer (as Lord of the Manor of Burford, very unpopular for reducing the power of the burgesses); he entertained James I here in 1603, and altered it. William (Speaker) Lenthall bought The Priory in 1637 and died in 1662 having extended and remodelled it. Charles II dined here in 1681 en route to the Burford Races. After a chequered history including the amputation of outer wings and flattening of the facade in early C19, The Priory was saved from complete dereliction in 1908 by Col de Sales de la Terriere whose work was continued by Emslie John Horniman, who bought it in 1912. It is now the Convent of The Community of the Salutation of Our Lady (Anglican Benedictine), enclosed order, hence the elegant half- moon yew screen to entrance. Despite alterations, a good example of a mid-C17 gentleman's house... IOE

Composite Window

Composite Window

Window at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic church in Bilton, Warwickshire.

This composite panel was made up of 'leftover' pieces of one of the former side windows of the nave, displaced when the church was extended in 1990. Other parts have been incorporated into windows two similar windows nearby.

Originally built in 1958 on a traditional plan with an oblong nave and chancel in one chamber, the church was dramatically re-organised and extended in the early 1990s under the guidance of Fr Paul Chamberlain, wherein the axis of the church was re-orientated by 90 degrees with a centralised granite block altar in what was the heart of the old nave. The 'south' nave wall was removed to allow an extended aisle and ambulatory on this side. The former main entrance narthex was blocked up to create what is now the Blessed Sacrament chapel.

One of the most dramatic innovations in the re-ordered church is the full immersion fount, a cruciform marble pool set into the floor before the altar, evoking the earliest method of Christian Baptism by immersion in the River Jordan.

The two main stained glass windows on either side of the old nave were removed and re-sited in truncated form in the new extension, and in the place of the northern one a large crucifix (painted by Fr Chamberlain) has been set up as a focus behind the new altar. The six high windows on this wall are the latest addition to the church and are my own work from 1999.

Toshiba 57H83 57-Inch HDTV-Ready TheaterWide Projection TV

N/A

Amazon.com Product Description Note: Toshiba 57H83 57" HDTV-Ready TheaterWide Projection TV is no longer being manufactured. You may want to consider purchasing the newer Toshiba 57H84 57" HD-Ready Rear-Projection TV with HDMI Input instead.
Blazing forth with its huge screen, high style, and bountiful high-tech features, Toshiba's 57H83 TheaterWide HDTV projection monitor is set to render vivid, smooth, and detailed video signals from DVD players, digital TV set-top boxes, digital satellite systems, cable television boxes--you name it. The set's TruView feature combines several enhancements (Black Level Expansion, Fine White, Flesh Tone Correction, and Color Detail Enhancer) to automatically display accurate picture and color details. Also automated, HD Dynamic Contrast continually analyzes picture information and sharpens and deepens those parts of the picture with the most detailed information.
The Benefits of HDTV

Standard TVs (SDTVs) display a maximum of 480 lines using the interlaced scan method, which creates a picture with alternating lines of information.

Enhanced-definition TVs (EDTVs) display a maximum of 480 lines using the progressive-scan method, which creates an image using consecutive lines of information for a crisp, flicker-free picture.

High-definition TVs (HDTVs) display a maximum of either 1,080 interlaced lines or 720 progressively scanned lines for the sharpest possible image.

And since not everything you watch will be high-definition in origin (wouldn't that be nice), CrystalScan HDSC upconverts all video signals (including 480i/p) to 1080i HD. This significantly reduces jagged-line artifacts for a smoother, more natural image. (Selectable 540p, for those who want a progressive-scan image from a progressive-scan source, is available through the onscreen menu.) CableClear DNR+ Digital Noise Reduction circuitry optimizes poor NTSC signals from antenna or cable by eliminating video noise (snow).
Meanwhile, DFine high-speed velocity-scan modulation improves the definition at picture edges, creating sharper images by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work--say, when rendering transitions from light to dark parts of an image--and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas.
A 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter with Vertical Contour Correction processes RF and composite-video signals for a sharp, clean picture. This advanced filter significantly reduces detail noise, seen as shimmering or flicker, in complex or intricate scenes. The TouchFocus digital convergence system creates perfect corner-to-corner focus at the press of a button. Cinema Mode (3:2 pulldown) circuitry identifies film-based content from DVDs and reassembles the frame sequence to more accurately reproduce a movie's original 24-frame rate. This process eliminates artifacts and provides sharp, accurate full-frame progressive images.
Finally, the set's TheaterFine HD super fine-pitch screen uses a .52 mm design to reduce the space between lines on the lenticular screen, thereby sharpening the image. With convenient direct video input selection, you can choose specific inputs right from the remote's numbered keypad--no more scrolling through all the inputs to find the one you want.

The 57H83's arsenal of connections includes a DVI input for an HDTV receiver.
For audio, the 57H83 offers SRS WOW, combining SRS 3D (which creates a wide three-dimensional sound field), TruBass (which boosts bass frequency perception for dramatic low-frequency effects), and Focus (which raises the perceived sound image vertically to clarify voices) to greatly enhance home-theater sound. StableSound maintains television volume within a preset range regardless of the source signal, and Toshiba's Sub Bass System (SBS) boosts a program's low-end audio for heightened dramatic impact.
The 57H83 is loaded with connections of all stripes, including a DVI HDTV input, which gives you a pure, uncompressed video connection with your DTV receiver or set-top box (not included). The supplied Illuminated Universal Remote also controls most manufacturers' VCRs and DVD Players, and the set's split cabinet design allows the cabinet to be split in two for ease of delivery and installation.
What's in the Box

Enhanced Random-Orbit Sanding Action for a Clean Finish
Whether you're stripping old furniture or prepping new molding for installation, the 3727DEVS delivers aggressive stock removal and a clean, swirl-free finish. Free rotation and a 5/32-inch eccentric orbit diameter (5/64-inch offset) allow the sander's pad to duplicate a natural, hand-sanding action and ensuring that abrasive material never follows the same path twice. This enhanced random-orbit action combines with Bosch's unique integral pad dampening system to keep your workpieces free of swirl marks.
Versatile, Powerful 3.3-Amp Motor for Fast, Smooth Results
The 3727DEVS's 3.3-amp motor provides the power you need to remove stock quickly and efficiently, making fast work of difficult jobs. I saw a picture of a whales eye a day or two ago but now I've forgotten where. I think they're fairly common, though, there must be other people who see the uncanny intelligence in pigs eyes and those of whales.
pig's eye reincarnation female child male child (They've disabled the control f function. I don't know what it's called. It's the one that allows me to search this draft window, for instance. I think I'll try to shut the computer down. They won't let it go back to default----I think they must have moved control v to control f so that it copied the text I had in the memory buffer into the control f window instead of just opening the window. I just went back and dragged the text in the window and copied it into the memory buffer and now the control f function works. I guess on Apple, it's "command" x.

Every morning as I start the skier and other gargoyles comment as I bring up the windows I need and begin to type in the text and so on. They generally make throat sounds like coughs and clears but there is one that makes inaudible vocalizations on a consistent basis from day to day. Today I decided to stand and see which one it was. I was surprised to see that it was---or at least that it was him I decided on since there is no way of knowing if I'm correct or not---the William Burroughs. He was just sitting in a place from which I thought the sound came. I think most of the other gargoyles were pretty new ones. The male with the salt and pepper hair pulled back in a slightly disreputable looking pony tail is here but the rest were sort of middle aged looking men who seemed to be posing with a catbird smile as I walked by. Of course, I never look very closely and am usually to stressed out to really see what I see. They seem to be getting more cruel every day. When I got back and started to copy these last 3 pictures the William Burroughs came and moved all his things---he has considerable baggage including that large dolly type suitcase and a backpack---and sat behind, then move and is sitting 1 carrel over to my right. I've never really looked at him of course but as he sat down, the thought occurred to me that he's a Jamie Morris. Anyway, he made sounds in his throat and the skier or one of the others cough in what seemed to me to be a reply. He's been quiet now through these last sentences as have the rest of them. "Nick" cruised me twice this morning. Once as I left my house and once as I waited for the bus. As I was leaving my house, I saw a mountain bike coming down 21st so. on the wrong side of the street steering eraticaly in a way that made me think the byciclist was trying to gain my attention. I turned back in order to avoid any interaction with him. (I turned into the Expresso parking lot.) but as I did, I realized it must be "Nick" and knew that he would take revenge on me for trying to avoid him and so I thought about turning around and taking up my original route but that would have been too strange or something so I just made a circuit around the Expresso and he was gone by the time I got back. He had crossed the street and was on the sidewalk part way between 5th and 6th E. I think he was responding to yesterday when cruised me as I waited for a bus. He yelled some kind of greeting at me and instead of vocalizing a response, I nodded. The thought occurred to me that he said something cruel and threatening to me in his mind and under his breath. He gets quite elaborate with revenge vignettes at times and often involves all the backpack males in them. I forgot about a "beaver shot" they gave me yesterday. I was going to write it up at the time but I was working on recording the reading they're having me do. As I've said, they nearly always give me problems when I go to use the restroom---the William Burroughs just greeted a young middle-aged male who has been harassing me for several months. He always sits upstairs, though. I don't think I've ever seen him in the "guest section". I've always thought he has taken the place of the sleeper I've described who tormented me for many years---and this time I went without too much trouble but when I decided to go back and get some water, three 3 main day janitor antagonists crossed my path in a way that made me feel I was being attacked in the subtle way they do. On the first trip to urinate, I noticed a group of student age males and females sitting in the foyer area east of the restroom lobby and I was surprised when they didn't seem to have any awareness of me as I passed. This time, on my way back from getting water, after the 3 day janitors had passed I noticed that one of the student aged females was sitting with ankle crossed over the opposite knee in a way that exposed the inside of her upper thighs. She was staring at or maybe she just looked intently at me for a moment and thought about looking to see if she were exposing her panties but I didn't want to beca

Every gallery here has opened since the start of 2008, and all are exhibiting art that’s startling, affecting, or just plain fun. Since most (though not all) of them show emerging artists, the barriers to buying—financial and otherwise—are low. If you like what you see, you just may be able to take it home.

Beauchene—who represents a nice mix of emerging and emerged artists—is showing Brooklynite Rachel Foullon’s wall-mounted sculptures of cedar and stained fabric, evoking the textures and details of life in rural America.

4. *Rachel Uffner
47 Orchard St.; 212-274-0064
Uffner’s September opening for Sara Greenberger Rafferty—who’s showing her murky manipulated portraits of seventies comedians through October 25—was packed to the rafters. A definite up-and-comer.

Saltz's Fall Gallery Tour
5. *Lisa Cooley Fine Art
34 Orchard St. 212-680-0564
Cooley represents a small crop of eclectic (and critically well-received) artists, and with the exception of a Texan and one West Coaster, all are local. Up now: a two-man show by painters Jon Pestoni and Zak Prekop (through October 18).

6. Collette Blanchard
26 Clinton St.; 917-639-3912
Blanchard made a splash last October with “Belle du Jour” (images of the female figure as imagined by E.?V. Day, Mickalene Thomas, Shinique Smith, and others). Feminism is on the roster this fall, too, with Nancy Friedemann’s unexpectedly dramatic enamel paintings of lace and embroidery—a confluence of traditionally male and female media (through October 26).

7. Satori
164 Stanton St.; 646-896-1075
Like Blanchard, Satori is farther east than most local spaces, and both are worth the trek. This month, see one of the area’s few sculpture shows: Benjamin S. Jones’s wooden models inspired by not-so-stable urban architecture and planning (through October 18).

8. Sloan Fine Art
128 Rivington St. 212-477-1140
Alix Sloan worked as a private art dealer in Los Angeles before opening here in 2008. In November, look for a series of anthropomorphic digital animations and prints by Lilla LoCurto and Bill Outcault, which look like high-tech medical illustrations run amok.

9. *X Initiative
548 W. 22nd St.; 917-697-4886
A one-year project in the old Dia space, this is a not-for-profit spearheaded by dealer Elizabeth Dee. Phase two of its three-part season is on view through the end of this month. In addition to seeing the three artists within the building, don’t miss the roof installation made of swimming-pool noodles.

10. *Horton & Liu
504 W. 22nd St.; 212-243-2663
This gallery specializes in painting and is located on the parlor floor of a Chelsea brownstone, giving it the pre-white-cube vibe of an earlier age. It debuted in September with a show of brightly colored, densely structured, faintly Cubist paintings by Michael Berryhill (through October 10).

11. *David Zwirner
524 W. 19th St.; 212-517-8677
Mega-dealer David Zwirner—who’s showing Chris Ofili and Raoul De Keyser across the street through October 24—will open his fourth Chelsea storefront early next year, expanding his retail space to an immense 40,000 square feet. The new building, a.k.a. Shigeru Ban’s Metal Shutter Houses, is almost an exhibit itself.

12. Hendershot Gallery
547 W. 27th St., Ste. 632 212-239-3085
James Hendershot represents commercial as well as fine-arts photographers, giving him a cash buffer in tricky times. He also reps a wide range of up-and-comers like Joe Fig, whose witty paintings and sculptures of artists’ studios—reproducing in micro-detail the worktable of, say, Ross Bleckner or Chuck Close—go on view October 15.

13. Slag
531 W. 25th St.; 212-967-9818
A passion project from Romanian-born collector Irina Protopopescu, Slag (named, symbolically, for the unwanted but recyclable by-product of ore smelting) opened last summer to showcase Eastern European artists. Right now, she’s hosting Romanian artist Mircea Suciu, whose bleak paintings look like fifties ads stripped of all their chipper optimism.

I would love to have a tiled floor like this.

As in, once I've got an occasion to lay tile, you can bet that I'll spend hours and hours with the tile cutter making the perfect tile pattern, driving my poor wife and any other household residents go nuts.

Electric Floor Model Machine W/ Power Feed, 75'X3/4" Cable & Cutter Set

General Pipe Cleaners Electric Floor Model Machine w/ Power Feed, 75'x3/4" Cable ; Cutter Set The Speedrooter 92 has root cutting power plus the ability to do small drain work. For smaller lines, you switch to a drum that holds 1/2" cable (available separately), a job that takes less than a minute. Just loosen three knobs, swing the motor to the side, and lift off the drum. The power cable feed drives 3/4", 5/8", and 1/2" cables and has the pulling power to get your cable out of the line even on long, tough jobs. To adjust for 3/4" or 5/8" cables, you simply turn the knob on top of the feed. The screwdriver stays in the tool box. Getting to and from the job is easier because the Speedrooter 92 has big ten-inch wheels, V-belt stair climbers to get up and down stairs easier, and a loading wheel mounted on the handle to help you lift the machine into a truck. This lean but tough machine can really take a beating, with extra bracing at key stress points. The drum is supported front and back for longer bearing wear and smoother operation. The large drum has a see-through inner cage, so that the operator quickly can tell how much cable is left in the drum. Standard equipment also includes a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter and an "Off" position on the reverse switch, so the machine won't start if the pedal is pressed accidentally. 32.00 L. 28.75 W. 23.00 H.
